another "finally did"

Can't believe I forgot to mention another thing I finally got around to this morning...I made an appointment for my long overdue first mammogram.

Now, I can't say I'm afraid or even apprehensive about it. (The reason I haven't done it before now has more to do with inconvenience than anything. I know, I know, that's a truly lousy excuse.) Anyway, like I said, it's not that I'm worried. But I am curious about what it's like to have one. I'm assuming it doesn't hurt or anything, right? Is it uncomfortable? Does it take long? Any info that anyone is willing to pass along would be greatly appreciated.

OK, I'm not the world's biggest expert, but I have had two now. I was sooo scared the first year and it really and honestly and truthfully was not bad. It is so much easier for me than the pelvic exam. At my doctor's office, they do that first and I get it over with quick. I go into a changing room, take off the top half of clothes and put on the white cape like paper towel :) A very nice tech (I've had 2 different ones and both were sweet as pie) takes me into the room with the machine. It is cold and it does squeeze a bit, but it's not that bad and it's over quick. They help you get your arm and boobie placed and go snap the button to take the mammogram. It's pretty quick. I think I'm in and out in about 5 minutes.

Did that help any? I'd rather than 10 mammograms a year than 1 pelvic exam, but maybe that's just me :)

So glad you made the appointment. I don't like going either, but I like it better than the consequences of something happening, and knowing I might have prevented it or caught it early.

First of all, I'm so glad you made the appointment - it really is a necessary annual thing.

Secondly, Stacy is right - it's no biggie. Depending on the tech and amount of compression (better readings with firmer compression), at most it can be a little uncomfortable but is over very quickly. The real thing that struck me, other than the squeezing stuff, is that sucker can be cold!! LOL!

After I get squeezed, they have me get dressed and wait a bit until the radiographer does a quick read to make sure I didn't move or the film isn't blurry and we don't have to do anything again. I'm almost always in and out before my actual appointment time!

You'll be fine and way glad you did it.
