made with love

I come by my love of crafting and creating honestly. My family is loaded with talented crafters. It's in my genes, I guess. (Well, the love, that is, not the talent.) Anyway, I have long meant to make a scrapbook documenting some of our precious treasures made by loved ones. But a comment Jean made yesterday, gave me an idea. Why not blog about them? After all, I'm much more likely to get that done than I am a scrapbook! So, from time to time, I'm going to do a little post about a handmade treasure that adorns our home.

The quilt that sparked Jean's comment was made by my incredible mom. The photo really doesn't do the quilt justice, I must say. It is so vibrant and cheerful in real life. I saw this printed panel somewhere and fell in love with it. So of course, Mom, being the sweet, thoughtful, generous soul she is, set to work making it for me. She cross-stitched the design (it was printed on the fabric), and then she hand-quilted it. I tried, but couldn't manage to get a good close-up of her quilting. She is amazing! Truly, truly a talented quilter. She doesn't love piecing quilts, though she has done several. Her passion is the hand-quilting. And believe me, her love shines right through!

Thanks, Debi! I'm impressed, especially about the hand-quilting. Once I discovered one could use a sewing machine for quilting as well as piecing, I haven't looked back. And while both my grandmothers made various things--afghans, quilts, etc.--it skipped a generation in my family. My mom just shakes her head at all the various projects I have in progress--dyeing, knitting, quilting, felting ...

Wow, I'm not a crafter or sewer by any stretch of the imagination, so this is totally impressive to me! And how wonderful to have this, what a treasure it is and will be for future generations.

You know, a while back I was going to do the same thing. Post pictures of "treasures", things that are special to me for various reasons, at my blog. I created a category, did the first one, and promptly forgot! Most of the things that I have are not handmade, so that makes this kind even more special.

Hmmm... new blog material, maybe?! Great idea Debi!

Ya know, I spotted this quilt in your picture the other day and thought it was so pretty! What a wonderful job your Mom did. Nobody in my family is crafty so I just enjoy it through y'all that are, LOL.

Great post Debi! I'd love to be able to quilt and that's impressive that your mom did it by hand. I can sew but the "real" quilting part is something I haven't learned yet.

I'm a quilter/crafter. I got my start with Xstitch and moved into quilting from there. I haven't had much time to do any crafty things lately. Thanks for sharing your picture. It's lovely.

It's beautiful! Your mom did a lovely job! I took a quilting class about 24 years ago. I never finished my quilt :) I love the idea of you blogging your treasures. We can all see them now.

take care,
Dawn
