brain break

I've been diligently working away on Annie's first quarter progress report. I know I stress out about far more than necessary, and I know I include way more information than is necessary. Just my nature, I guess. But I decided I just needed a breather. So instead of doing something productive like cleaning or catching up on the laundry, I decided I'd pop in here for a few. Though frankly, I don't have anything of interest to say.

Yesterday was a busy one. Not full of the usual busy stuff, but those things that only pop up once in while...

Like taking all three kids to the dentist for their cleanings/check-ups. Good news--no cavities. Bad news--it still cost close to $500! Ouch! (Gray had sealants put on his molars, which upped the cost.)

Like receiving a jury summons. Which I had to call in about, because I simply don't have anyone to stay with the kids. All I have to do is send in copies of the munchkins birth certificates and I get a 2-year reprieve. Actually kinda wish I could do it. Back when I was young (850-some odd years ago or so), I used to enjoy going to watch trials just for the heck of it.

Like parent-teacher conferences. Which went extremely well. No big surprises or anything. We did make the decision with Gray's teacher to have him see an OT to help him with his fine motor skills. Someday I'll have to take a picture of the way he holds a pencil. It's amazing he can write legibly at all, let alone crank out the abundance of artwork he does. Academically, he's excelling. And as for Max, I'm so grateful he has such a sweet teacher. It took her no time at all to realize that Max is mortified to be the center of attention, so she's very good about only asking him things when he raises his hand (which I'm surprised he ever does).

Like getting to go to Borders without the kids in tow. I was very good, too. Bought two small Christmas gifts. And otherwise, only bought two books, both from the bargain tables. Dune, which I've been thinking of reading with Annie for school. Probably not until next year though, because we've already got so many on slate for the current school year. Also bought Light on Snow, by Anita Shreve. I've never read anything by her, and I'd never heard of the book, but it sounded like it might be good. I'll find out next year, because I substituted it for my "weather event" book for Annie's challenge.

Suppose I've wasted enough time. Back to the reporting.

Oh, Anita Shreve is AWESOME!I haven't read the one you bought, but have read MANY of hers. Enjoy!

I got chilld when I read about Max's teacher. The world needs more teachers like that. To recognize his fears and address them the way she is. Love that!

Brain breaks are always a good thing!
I got called for Jury duty back before Ruthi started walking. I was so thankful to get out of it. Now I just hold my breath, because it's NOT something I want to do!!!!

I am glad the boys are doing well in school and that they both have teachers that seem to be looking out for them. There is nothing better than feeling like your kid is well cared for while away from home...

Ouch on that dental bill! Is that what insurance didn't cover or do y'all not have dental (we have no vision, but fortunately we're all O.K. vision wise - knock on wood!).

I haven't forgotten Annie's challenge...I am just not that together at this point. But I will get a list done - I am excited to participate. Who knows...maybe this will be the beginning of my own book challenge obsession...

Bummer on no preventative, but I guess it is good to know that anything major would be covered. Still a major out of pocket expense - yuck!

I have resisted even going to any of the sites for the reading challenges as I know I could easily be sucked in...there is a good chance that sooner or later I'll be joining you at Reading Challenge Anonymous meetings...

I haven't read anything by her yet.
Remember those days of taking all the kids to the dentist! It is expensive and then we had them in braces at same times or maybe back to back to back....one get them off after 2-3 yrs and next one got them put on like the same day! Such fun.
I wouldn't mind jury duty so much if they just didn't know my name and where I lived! silly me.

We have had 3 homeschool coordinators in 3 years of homeschooling and each one seems to want quarterly reports done differently. I was rather put out the first year when I wronte these detailed reports to only be told that no one actually reads them.Grrrr.

I think the twins are interested in Annie's challenge :)

Jury summons are in the air. I just had mine a couple of weeks ago. I wonder who will get one next...?

I haven't liked a whole lot of Anita Shreve, but I loved Light on Snow. Hopefully you'll enjoy it!

I've read some Anita Shreve and liked it a lot. We did the dentist thing yesterday for Iz. Got good reports, yay!
Happy Thursday.

Here in Virginia, you can only get out of jury duty because of child care if the kids are under 5. Once they're old enough to be in school, the automatic exemption no longer applies. They don't count the before-school and after-school hours as requiring child care, I guess. And since most places in Virginia have full-day kindergarten, even that half-day need for child care doesn't come into play.
