taking responsibility

I decided that I just need to put this down in black and white:

"The Christmas season does not drive me insane...I drive myself insane!"

There, I said it. I'm taking responsibility...

*I do not need to essentially redecorate the whole house (from curtains to afghans to the photos in our picture frames, etc.) for Christmas...I love having our home turned into a mini Christmas wonderland.

*I do not have to "spring clean" the house each November...I just feel so much better about decorating when everything is spotless.

*I do not have to make all (or even any) of our Christmas cards...it just feels good to do something so personal for those I love.

*I do not have to bake 10 kinds of cookies...I just love delivering platters of cookies to the neighbors, and yes, I enjoy devouring them myself as well.

You know, I could go on and on and on with this list. I'm not required to do any of these things. I choose to do them.

Now if you could just do me a favor? When I start whining and complaining about everything I "have" to get done and how there isn't any possible way I can finish it all, please reach through the screen here and wallop me upside the head! Thanks.

You make me laugh because this is a counseling tool we learn in school..."I have to do X", "no, you CHOOSE to do X" LOL! Looks like you have it down pat!

I understand though. Those little traditions make Christmas just a little bit more special...but the sure do stress the hell out of you!

I always wonder how my Gram pulled it off every single year. It couldn't have been a piece of cake, but she always made it seem like it was...

Maybe you could make a list of what you do because you really take joy in doing it and what you do for other reasons. Or make things easier on your self in ways like, maybe hire a cleaning crew to do your pre-decorating cleaning or set a number of cards you'll make by hand and buy the rest or whatever!

Chris-

Does that mean I'm actually mentally healthy? Yeah right, let's not push it, huh?!!

LOL! Wonder why we do this, because I think a lot of us are the same way....but it makes it seem special and there's something about traditions.

Oh,yes...I hear you on the Spring Cleaning in November. I won't decorate until the house is clean.

I really should make myself promise some of these same things. Yup. As long as you promise to squelch my whining and complaining too :P

Oh, Debi. I am SO like this (you know it, right?!). Although I don't decorate, I just about kill myself with traditions - keeping alive the traditions from when I was a little girl and trying to create new traditions for my own family. It's exhausting.

And I always wonder why my husband looks so relaxed.

Those things are fun to do as long as you don't let them stress you out, so yes, it's good to keep in mind that you don't HAVE to do them. Of course, it's easier said than done...

I also really love baking Christmas cookies for family and friends. Not 10 different kinds, though :P I don't think I even know how to bake 10 different kinds. You should share your recipes!
