just another dose of useless rambling

*I finished up Grimms' Fairy Tales today. This little Puffins Classics edition only contained 55 tales...which leaves me very excited knowing how many more there are to read. Going to have to buy The Complete Grimms' Fairy Tales very soon. Before I ramble on to other subjects, I just wanted to mention that I think this may be the funniest start to a tale I've yet read:

Once upon a time a mouse, a bird, and a sausage took it into their heads to keep house together...

Okay, maybe it's just my mood, but I can't read that without giggling.

*I'm tired of the spring weather roller-coaster. We're currently in a dip, with a high of 48 degrees for today. And rain. Quite dreary.

*I finished up The Translator last night, but I am really struggling at writing a review. Hopefully by tomorrow.

*Our dryer died today. So now I have clothes hanging all over the house drying. Not terribly attractive, let me tell you.

*Baker is driving us a bit crazy. Last Friday, he found a rabbit's nest in the yard. He killed one of the babies before I realized. But from the kitchen window, I saw him carrying something in his mouth. I went and yelled out the door for him to "leave it" and he immediately dropped it. Turned out to be an adorable itty bitty bunny, about the size of a mouse. I got him into a box with some grass,

and then Annie and I searched and searched and searched the yard for the nest but couldn't find it. Didn't seem like it would be that hard as our yard isn't very big. Finally Rich came home and found it fairly quickly. So we put the baby back in the nest, and it appears the mama has been back and taking care of it. But until baby is grown enough to be leaving the nest and whatnot, we've had to take to chaining Baker up in the backyard when he wants out instead of letting him run free. (The yard is fenced.)

Love the line from the fairy tale. A sausage???

Sweet baby bunny! Maggie and Teddy have chased bunnies but never caught any - that I know of anyway. They did get chipmunks one day. Poor Maggie killed one then stood over it, pawing it as if she wanted it to get up and play. Teddy came up the hill with one in his mouth, which he dropped when told, and the chipmunk ran away.

I love that opening line to the fairy tale! One of the best I've read, lol. I've had the Translator on my list for awhile now...I'll get to it soon. Maybe your review will be the impetus for me to go buy it finally! Poor bunny..and poor Baker just following his instinct. Animal instinct can be heartbreaking sometimes, can't it? I'm so glad that you saved that cute little bunny though and that he seems to be doing ok! Keep us updated!

lol! I read that fairy tale yesterday because raych left me a comment urging me too, and yes, it really is a funny opener.

That baby rabbit is so adorable. It's too bad that one of them got killed, but Baker can't be blamed, of course. He was just being a dog. It's good that this one is doing okay, though, and like Chris said, keep us updated!

Will definitely keep you updated about the bunny baby! I hope no one thought we were blaming Baker about the bunnies. As Rich and I have said to each other, it's tempting to be mad at him, but we just can't. He was just being a dog. I kind of forgot to explain why he was driving us crazy though, didn't I? For whatever weird reason, he just won't go the bathroom when he's out there on the chain. He'll go if someone takes him for a walk, and he's gone in the house a couple of times (which he NEVER normally does), but he will not go out in the backyard now. I'm not sure if it's some kind of protest about not being about to run free or what. Baffling.

How could you NOT giggle - a mouse, a bird and a SAUSAGE? That's even interesting enough to make ME want to read it and find out what happens!

I know what you mean about the weather - but I'm not complaining. We keep having cool (not cold) spells, and I'm enjoying them. I'm totally dreading the high summer temps! Ugh! So I'll take as much cool as I can get right now!

That stinks about the dryer - I hope it's an easy and inexpensive fix!

Oh my - that bunny is so adorable! I'm glad the mom is taking care of it. Can't wait for updates on how it's doing!

I didn't think you were blaming Baker at all :) That's sad that he won't go to the bathroom out there now...I'm guessing that you have it right and that he just gets mad being kept on a chain. I bet he'd go in a sec if you let him run free...but then of course he'd have a nice little rabbit for dinner :p

I didn't think you were blaming Baker either, I just didn't want to say "poor bunny!" and imply "and evil, evil Baker" :P That's odd that he won't go outside anymore...like you said, it could be a protest. Sometimes animals just react in the most unexpected ways to the slightest change in their habits. I know mine do.

I find that line funny too, so that either means it is a great line or that we share the same odd sense of humor!

Poor bunny. Our first dog did the same thing and we ended up putting tomato cages around the bunnies until their mother wisely decided that moving them to a safer, dog-free locale was a better option.

I wonder if Baker's being on a chain in the yard makes him view it as a very large crate. I know most dogs will soil their crates only as a last resort--it's a den or a home to them. So it could be not that Baker is mad but that the chain has changed his perception of the yard. I'd inquire of the resident dog here, Marburg, but he's sound asleep on his porch.

Oh, my gosh, how cute!! I'm so glad you saved the little critter. I've done that, "DROP it!" It works about 50% of the time on the cat. Fortunately, my cat is getting older and a bit less interested in hunting (much more of an indoor girl, now, also).

That opening line is great!

Oh, how sweet! I hope he survives. We found a baby blue jay once, but after three days of caring for it (we even managed to feed it!) it died. But this bunny is back in the nest, so I bet it'll be ok.

But yeah, being mad at Baker would be like being mad at the wind for blowing. My cat just left us a dead bird on the porch as a gift, but as much as I love birds, there's no way I could be mad at her for being a cat. And if I kept her inside so she didn't kill birds, then I'd be denying her her greatest pleasure in life, because you never saw a cat who loved the yard as much as this one!

that really is an hilarious opening line! i love it.

and one wonders about who came up with it. like, did they write it without any irony whatsoever...?

Awwww! This bbay bunny is much cuter than the dead one i posted a pic of recently:P So sad.

I haven't had a dryer since September. It took me a while to find a system to cope but now I don't even miss it. It's weird! Of course now that nicer weather is here, it's all much easier. (and holy cow, did our electric bill go down!)
