Library Loot

Annie and I hit the library yesterday, and I was very excited by what I found there. I'd planned on sharing anyway, and when when I saw Eva's Library Loot, well how could I resist, huh?

I hit the graphic novels section in hopes of finding a Manga book to start out Rhinoa's challenge. After flipping through several that I just wasn't sure about, I came across Bizenghast by Marty LeGrow. Picked up the first two. Not sure what I'll think (my very first experience with Manga), but they sure sounded good.

And while I was there, I figured I'd look for a couple books for the Graphic Novels challenge. I've been wanted to read Rose by Jeff Smith for a long time now, and was thrilled to find it. Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi was just a total impulse pick-up...looked fun. And The Doll's House! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it! Our library branch apparently just bought it. I inter-library loaned it one time months back...only to be totally disappointed because a bunch of the pages had been cut out of it. Had to do a little happy dance right there in the library when I found that one. Which, by the way, is a very good way to embarrass one's preteen daughter.

Finally, there's Weedflower by Cynthia Kadohata, another one I've been wanting to read for a while. And it will work perfectly for the World War II challenge.

Yep, I was mighty pleased with my little haul.

Congrats on your Dollhouse find! That's so weird someone would cut pages out of a library book. :( I'll be curious what you think of manga-I've never tried it.

Consider me stupid, but what's a Manga book? I've seen the term but have no idea what it is. Am I missing something wonderful?

I love this new feature and have just posted my first Library Loot post too. Weedflower sounds like it might be good. I'll watch for your comments/review of it. Happy reading.

I'm glad you found those books, Debi! I'm sure you'll have a great time reading them! :)

Lynne, Manga is pretty much a Japanese comic book... They are released in Japan, which is pretty much the centre of the comic book world, and then translated into English so that we can enjoy them. They are not for everyone. They tend to have a specific formula that they follow. Normally, though, they are very unbiased, I find. They push the envelope and there is usually a lot of fantasy involved. Have you ever seen Sailor Moon, the tv show, they are sort of that in bookform. What a long-winded way to look at them... Nowadays, manga is being published in the U.S. and other countries, but it got its start elsewhere. If you are interested, I know a site where you can read manga online for free and see if they at all appeal to you, just get in touch with me. :)

Oh, and great haul, Debi! Your blog, I should probably acknowledge you, huh? lol

Eva,
Isn't that awful?!! What they did was cut out all the Dave McKean artwork.

Lynne,
Whew...I'm so glad Kailana answered, because I'm a true neophyte here.

Sandra,
I think it's a pretty cool idea, too! Can't wait to pop over and read about your haul. :)

Melody,
Thanks...and I'm sure you're right!

Kailana,
Nope, no need to acknowledge me. Seriously, any idea how glad I am that you answered Lynne?!! I could have got as far as "Japanese" and "comic"...that's where my knowledge ends.

It looks like you got quite a collection of books there! I don't know where you find the time to do all the reading you do. I barely have time when I get home from school, cook dinner etc. I'm too pooped LOL! One of these days I will brag about reading a fraction of the books you read.

take care,
Dawn

The Doll's House! Rose! Fantastic loot :D

Bizenghast sounds good too. I remember reading Rhinoa's reviews of them and they sound like something I'd like.

Can't wait to read your thoughts on all of those.

I've never read Bizenghast but I have always loved the way the title is designed, if that makes any sense whatsoever.

You definitely got some cool stuff there.

Dawn,
I'm honestly not sure I get much more reading done than you do. I think I just buy and borrow a lot more books. :)

Nymeth,
I was definitely mighty pleased with my haul! :)

Carl,
It does, I knew immediately what you meant!
