library loot for a new challenge

Like I wasn't already far enough behind on my blog reading, the internet just had to go out for the much of the day. And I'd really wanted to make this post earlier, so I could finish up my monthly wrap-up post this evening as we've decided to hit the road and go visit Rich's mom tomorrow. Oh well...hardly worth stressing over.

*****

So anyway, the Color Me Brown Book Challenge starts in just a couple of days. I'm so excited about this, and wish that I could just devote the entire month of reading to it. Alas, school planning requirements won't allow that. But I'm shooting for at least four. Which obviously means I have to get a lot more read than I did this pathetic month! As I already personally challenged myself to read all of Susan's unofficial list of great YA by and about women of color, I'll probably overlap a few books here.

(Library Loot is co-hosted by Eva and Marg.)
We hit the library yesterday, and I picked up a couple books for this challenge.

Pemba's Song: A Ghost Story by Tonya C. Hegamin and Marilyn Nelson.
I can't wait to read this...it looks sooooo good! And I believe it's on Susan's list, too.

Behind You by Jacqueline Woodson.
I picked this one up not realizing that it was the sequel to If You Come Softly. Don't want to read out of order, now do I. So I quickly remedied this problem by ordering If You Come Softly from PaperbackSwap.

Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This is one I picked up for school, for our history through literature unit. It's about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but frankly I don't feel like reading it...I'm very much in one of those pissy moods where I'm sick to death of being obligated to read things for school. Yeah, I'm being whiny.

Rapunzel's Revenge by Shannon and Dean Hale.
Total impulse pick-up. When I saw it, I couldn't resist.

Okay, back to our trip now. These are the books I'm bringing:

--The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. (reading for school)
--Oh Pure and Radiant Heart by Lydia Millet. (what I'm currently reading for fun)
--Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix. (in case I finish The Jungle)
--The Best of John Bellairs (in case there is time to read to the boys in the midst of extended family chaos)
--The Body of Christopher Creed by Carol Plum-Ucci (because Renay asked so very nicely)
--Pemba's Song by Marilyn Nelson and Tonya C. Hegamin (because I'm simply itching to crack it open)
--Rapunzel's Revenge by Shannon and Dean Hale (in case I get a strong craving for a graphic novel)

Now, seeing how I've read all of three books thus far this month, you may think bringing seven books for a long weekend is a bit of overkill. I'm sure you're right. But somehow it just feels comforting.

Hope you all have a truly fantastic weekend!!!!!

I love the cover on Pemba's Song! I can't wait to read your review of it. I'm challenging myself to three graphic novels for the Color Me Brown challenge. I wanted to do four, but apparently the only graphic novels out of India I'd have to buy and with the recent car wreck and coming back from Chicago, buying is the last thing I can do. Ah well.

Good luck with The Jungle. I'm suposed ot read that one for my book club I'm moderating next week, but I'm just not. This'll be the first time I've ever skipped out reading in nearly 3 years, so hopefully my group won't fault me. I'll bring some study questions to help guide the group!

You have a grand weekend, too, Debi! Have you figured out if you're going to make it down this way this summer? Should I bribe you with promises of books here?

I always bring too many books... It makes me nervous if I don't bring very many because I might run out!

Rapunzel's Revenge is a great book. :)

I hope you all have a fantastic long weekend as well. And you can never have too many books along with you, in my opinion!

I really need to check out the Color me Brown challenge. Must have missed that one somewhere down the line!!

I started reading The Jungle a few years ago, but I never did finish it. I don't know why either. I was actually enjoying the book. Just was taking some time.

Have a great trip!

I have a Jacqueline Woodson lined up for the challenge as well. I've heard nothing but good things about her, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Have a great trip, and enjoy your weekend!

I like the look of Pemba's song and the fact it is a ghost story has me wanting it more. I dare not join another challenge, even though it does sound good, but I have joined two more this week. Have a fantastic break, see you when you get back.

Love your "new" bathroom...I swear one of these years we are going to get up there so I can see it in person!

I just spent quite a while clicking on your links and learning about the "Liar" cover - thanks for keeping me updated on current events in the literary world. I had no idea that authors have so little say over the final covers. That is disgusting.

We are always up for movies, but don't feel like you need to spend a bunch of money to send them. We never did settle the birthday/Christmas gift debate so we still need to work ont hat one, too!

BTW, you can never take too many books on vacation - that is what vacation is for!

I *hope* you find yourself surprised by Uprising. It was one of my favorite, favorite, favorite books of 2008. It was such an incredible read for me. And have you read any Haddix before? I can't remember... She's one of my favorites--all her books are so different from one another, so even if you don't love this one, you should give one of her others a try at some point.

Uprising sounds really intriguing and I've been hearing great things about Jacqueline Woodson lately. Hope you enjoy the reads, Debi--and I really hope you have a great time with Rich's mother. Will you be staying long?

I'm doing the Color Me Brown challenge too. Love the cover of Pemba's Song. I've always meant to read The Jungle and never got to it. I'll be interested in your thoughts on it. Have a great trip.
